Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Exterior Maintenance

  1. Clean and repair screens.

  2. Inspect for peeling or blistering paint.

  3. Roof Inspection by a professional roofing contractor.

  4. After the last leaf falls, clear out the gutters and downspouts, flush them with water, inspect joints and tighten brackets. Make sure that the downspouts are pointed away from the foundation.

  5. Cover the pool.

  6. Weather-strip the garage door, making sure there is a tight seal between the garage door and the ground.

  7. Inspect the driveway for cracks. Clean out and repair any damage with driveway filler, then coat with a commercial sealer.

  8. Check the foundation for cracks; caulk around the areas where masonry meets siding or other exterior materials; where pipes or wires enter the house, and around windows and door frames.


Interior Maintenance

  1. Check for proper sealing and insulation on all windows and doors, and apply weather stripping and caulk where it's needed.

  2. Have a professional heating contractor check your heating system, including ducts and furnaces.

  3. Examine your fireplace inserts door gasket for a tight seal. Clean and inspect the glass door for cracks, and have a professional chimney sweep clean the chimney.

  4. Change the direction of your ceiling fan to create and upward draft to redistribute warm air from the ceiling.

  5. Check the attic is insulated, ventilated and critter-free.

  7. Test and change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and keep extra household batteries on hand.

  8. Clean your humidifiers regularly during the heating season to avoid bacteria growth.
